How to Remap Your Scope Remote with Karabiner

Intro:

Although the Scope Remote was initially designed for Anki use only, We have made it very simple and easy for it to be used with other applications like Quizlet

Step 1: Download karabiner Elecments

1. Download

Download the correct Karabiner Elements (according to your macOS version) from their official site

Open .dmg → drag app to Applications

2. Open & Approve Permissions

Karabiner will ask for a few permissions and automatically redirect you to grant them. These are safe to approve — they’re required so Karabiner can change input from specific devices (like the Scope Remote) without affecting your keyboard or other devices — approve these in:

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility

If asked: Allow system extension (then restart)

3. Launch Karabiner Elements

  • Open Karabiner-Elements
  • The icons appear in the menu bar
  • Go to Devices and look for Scope Remote (make sure your Scope Remote is turned on and is paired to your device through Bluetooth)
  • Now toggle on Modify Events

Scope Remote's Pre-programmed settings

The Scope Remote has a side slider that lets you switch between Key Mode and Game Mode. We recommend staying in one mode outside of Anki, as switching can make hotkeys behave differently. This is a common source of confusion as many users don’t realize they’ve changed modes and think the remote isn’t working correctly.

4. Basic Mapping

  • Go to Simple Modifications
  • Select your device (Scope Remote)
  • You’ll see an empty list (that’s normal, as there are no mappings yet)
  • Click Add item
  • Under From key (left side), pick the key that currently exists (Pre-programmed) on the Scope Remote
  • Under To key (right side), pick what you want that button to behave as on the Mac.
  • Test it on a notes application.

4. Complex Modifications

  • The Scope Remote has an "@" configuration which was meant as 'suspend' card for Anki users however this key doesnt exist in the simple modifications and must be added in the complex modifications part.
  • Click Complex modifications
  • Click Add your own rule
  • Select all the code (Cmd + a) in the dialog box that pops up and replace it with this:

{
   "description": "Scope Remote only: treat @ as 5",
   "enabled": false,
   "manipulators": [
       {
           "conditions": [
               {
                   "identifiers": [
                       {
                           "is_keyboard": true,
                           "product_id": 64,
                           "vendor_id": 1118
                       }
                   ],
                   "type": "device_if"
               }
           ],
           "from": {
               "key_code": "2",
               "modifiers": { "mandatory": ["left_shift"] }
           },
           "to": [{ "key_code": "5" }],
           "type": "basic"
       }
   ]
}

  • Change '5' to the key you want the right analog stick to output.
  • Click Save, then Enable the modification.

7. Auto Launch

  • In your Mac settings, search 'Login Items' and add 'Karabiner elements' to 'Open at lauch'

This will ensure your settings are saved and ready everytime you open your computer.

How to Remap Your Scope Remote with PowerToys

Intro:

Although the Scope Remote was initially designed for Anki use only, We have made it very simple and easy for it to be used with other applications like Quizlet

Step 1: Download & Install PowerToys

2. Open Keyboard Manager

  • Launch PowerToys and go to Input & Output → Keyboard Manager.
  • Turn on Keyboard Manager using the toggle at the top.

4. Remap Scope Remote's Buttons

  • Click Remap a key.
  • On the left, under Select, click Select and press the remote button you want to change (e.g., X: Space).
  • On the right, under To send, click Select and press the keyboard key you want it to output (e.g., 3).
  • Repeat this for any other remote buttons you want to remap.
  • Once you’re done, on the top right, click ‘OK’ → ‘Continue Anyway’

4. Remap Scope Remote Buttons that Output Shortcuts

The Scope Remote has an "@" configuration which was meant as 'suspend card' for Anki users, it must be re-configured using shortcut remapping instead of key remapping.

  • Click Remap a shortcut.
  • On the left, under Select, press the keyboard shortcut the remote outputs (e.g., Shift + 2 for @).
  • On the right, press the key or combination you want it to trigger(e.g., 7).
  • Once you’re done, on the top right, click ‘OK’.

7. Toggle Keyboard Manager On/Off

Important: Any remapped key will also affect your physical keyboard. Use the toggle to switch between normal keyboard use and remote use without changing your remaps.

Use the toggle at the top of Keyboard Manager to turn remaps on or off.

  • When on, all remaps work on the remote and your laptop keyboard.
  • When off, your keyboard works normally, and remote remaps are disabled.
